& specifically designed for senior Emergency Physicians.

Develop the skill set of

Identifying Acute Coronary Occlusion before the ST elevates !!!

The  'Subtle ACS'  ECG Workshop

(Beyond the Basics)

--- UK Edition ---

A unique and rare opportunity for experienced A&E Clinicians to attend a full day advanced ECG workshop, exclusively dedicated to identification of subtle ischaemic ECG findings.

Date: 19th May 2024 (Sunday)

Timings: 0800 - 1700 (GMT)

Venue: Zoom meeting

Eligibility: Must have atleast 3-5 years of experience in regular ECG interpretation. This would be appropriate for clincians working in Senior Decision Making (SDM) roles in ED (HSTs or Registrar equivalent and above).

What are the 2 objectives of the workshop?

1) The first objective is to introduce experienced A&E Clinicians to the finer nuances of advanced ECG interpretation in ACS - with special focus on the OMI-NOMI paradigm.

2) The second objective is to help experienced A&E Clinicians develop the skillset of picking up subtle ECG findings of Acute Coronary Occlusion in seemingly normal looking ECGs - often well before the ST segment elevates

How will the objectives of the workshop be achieved?

This will be achieved by encouraging independent interpretation of lots of ECGs of Subtle ACS during the session. This is to strengthen pattern recognition, so that by the end of the workshop, even a clinician who is new to Subtle ACS, should be able to pick up most of the relevant subtle findings of ACS on seemingly normal looking ischaemic ECGs.

What should I expect?

• An intensive & interactive workshop specifically designed to meet the needs of Emergency Physicians in Senior Decision Making roles.

• Focus on identification of subtle signs of ischemia, including how to pick up ischaemia before STEMI occurs.

• Expert level tips to differentiate between ACS and the common important mimics of ischemia.

• Opportunity for lots of independent practice, designed to strengthen pattern recognition.

• Incorporates major recent advances in ECG interpretation in ischaemia, including the OMI NOMI paradigm.

Common errors in ECG interpretation will be discussed with tips on how to avoid them.

• Discussions will revolve around the lesser known, but clinically relevant aspects of ECG interpretation in ischaemia.

Knowledge of basic ECG interpretation will be assumed. Barndoor ischaemic ECGs will not be discussed.

How do I register for the session?

There are limited slots only and registration will be automatically closed once the slots are full. Thereafter a waiting list will be applicable & delegates on the waiting list will be contacted in case of any cancellations.

Please note:

Not sure if you may benefit from The 'Subtle ACS' ECG Workshop?

Check out my talk on Subtle ACS, and see if you can interpret the ECGs in it.

If you can't interpret the ECGs

or

if you find that the knowledge I share in it is new to you,

then you will definitely benefit from attending the workshop.

FAQs

Any clinician who has been regularly interpreting ECGs for atleast 3-5 years & is familiar with the common ECG patterns in ischaemia. Knowledge of basic ECG interpretation skills will be assumed. The delegate should be able to independently interpret obvious ischaemic as well as non ischaemic ECG etc.

As this is an advanced ECG workshop for delegates who are already experienced ECG interpreters, less experienced ECG interpreters may find the discussions overwhelming, as the focus will be on the subtleties & lesser known points rather than obvious findings & well known points. Moreover, basic ECG interpretation will not be discussed which make the session less useful for less experienced ECG interpreters.

While this workshop is aimed at Emergency Physicians, any physician who has been regularly interpreting ECGs for atleast 3-5 years & is familiar with common ECG patterns of ischaemia is welcome.

As far as I am concerned, there are only 2 levels of ECG interpretation - that expected from Cardiologists & Non-Cardiologists. All my teaching is focussed on helping non-Cardiology clinicians develop a level of ECG interpretation appropriate for their clinical practice. And that includes specialties like Acute Medicine, General Medicine, Critical care, Anaesthesia, Respiratory Medicine, Family Medicine & General Practitioners in addition to Emergency Medicine.

I often get requests from delegates from outside the UK to conduct sessions for them, but I am frequently restricted by logistical challenges, especially the differences in timezones. In this regard, I am happy to open this session to delegates from outside the NHS if the timings of the workshop work out for you.

There will be a registration fee of £60 for delegates from outside the NHS. Once you fill out the registration form, I will email you the details of how to proceed with the payment of registration fee.

My name is Obaid. I have been an Emergency Physician for over 11 years - initially as a Specialist Emergency Physician in India, then as a EM Registrar in London & now currently in EM training in Leeds.

During my early years in EM, I had a mentor in a Cardiologist who taught me the basic concepts of ECGs. Every week we used to spend 2 hours covering a topic from Leo Schamroth's 'An Introduction to Electrocardiography', and over a period of 6-7 months we covered the entire book. This was repeated multiple times over the next few years. This rigorous training completely changed the way I interpreted ECGs. It also sparked a lifelong passion in me to learn more about ECGs. As a result, I have spent a significant part of the last decade learning as well as teaching ECG interpretation.

Most ECG teaching resources are focussed on MBBS doctors who wish to learn basic ECG interpretation. However, there are very limited resources aimed at experienced clinicians who are already familiar with basic ECG interpretation, and wish to learn advanced ECG interpretation that is appropriate for their specialty. So my aim is to help develop resources for non-Cardiologists (especially EM physicians), which will help them develop expert level ECG interpretation skills in their relevant specialty.

I believe that advanced ECG interpretation is a mandatory skill for all Emergency Physicians. And that this skillset can only be attained by regular active efforts being made to improve the skillset - what I mean to say is that, advanced ECG interpretation is not something learnt on the job.

I get regularly invited to do ECG teaching at both at different trusts within the NHS as well as for A&E trainees outside of the UK. In 2024, I have also been invited to conduct ECG Workshops on Subtle ACS at RCEM's EMTA Conference & Oxford's OSEM Conference.

In my experience, most ECG workshops focus on MBBS doctors who wish to learn basic ECG interpretation. The reason why these workshops can cover all important topics in a single day is because most of topics are covered superficially with just the essentials being covered. And this is adequate for most MBBS level doctors who are expected to have basic ECG interpretation skills.

But when it comes to Specialty Doctors like Emergency Physicians, they are expected to have expert level ECG interpretation skills. This requires an understanding of the finer nuances of ECG interpretation.

As I mostly focus on teaching experienced ECG interpreters, I prefer to take one topic at a time & teach everything about it - starting from the relevant basics & moving into the finer nuances of complex ECGs - so that by the end of the session, the delegate knows everything appropriate for their level of clinical practice.

I also believe that the best way to learn ECGs is by independently practising ECG interpretation. So I design sessions with adequate time for the delegates to interpret plenty of ECGs - and then focus my discussion around their answers. Over the years, I find that this method is more useful to the delegate, as it provides a safe place for the delegates to learn from their mistakes, rather than simply hearing what I have to say.

Doing all this takes time - and hence the need for a full day workshop. Essentially it will be one long practice session.

When it comes to Subtle ACS, there has been a lot changes in how ischaemic ECGs are interpreted and a significant majority of physicians are either unaware or unfamiliar with this. So the aim of the Subtle ACS Workshop is to take someone who is new to this & have them practice so many of these ECGs, so that by the end of the session, they develop the pattern recognition needed to intepret Subtle ACS ECGs confidently.

If you want to have an idea of what the The 'Subtle ACS' ECG Workshop will be like, please watch the video above (STEMI-NSTEMI vs OMI-NOMI - A Paradigm Shift in the ECG interpretation of Acute MI).

If you are curious in general as to how I teach ECGs, I do have a YouTube channel which should give you an idea of my teaching. Most of my teaching on YouTube is meant for the general audience & so you will find that the topics discussed are quite basic. But it should give you an idea of how I use a Concept based approach to teach ECG interpretation.

I would like to reiterate here that The 'Subtle ACS' ECG workshop will be mostly based on pattern recognition, and not concept based

Also you can check out the Feedback section on this website, which will contain feedback from my past ECG teaching.

Unfortunately the live teaching session will not be recorded as recording a session inevitably brings down the interactiveness of the delegates. As I base my discussions almost entirely around the interpretation of the delegates, recording the session is something that directly impacts the quality of the session.

In addition, the workshop is meant to serve as a safe space for physicians in senior roles to practice ECG interpretation. In order to provide an ambience of psychological safety to all delegates, it is vital that the delegates have the freedom to express their interpretation without the fear of being recorded.

Cancellations will be permitted until the 5pm (UK) of May 12th 2024. Thereafter, no cancellations will be permitted. If a delegate is unable to attend the session for whatever reason and does not inform us prior to this date, it will result in the wastage of a slot (which could have been allocated to someone else) - such delegates will not be eligible for any of the free courses in the future.

For delegates from outside the NHS, cancellations before 5pm (UK) on May 12th will incur an admin charge of £20 & the rest will be refunded. Cancellelations after 5pm on May 12th will not be refunded.

For free courses run by Practical ECG Courses such as this one, Certificates are not provided as it involves significant additional running costs as well as administrative efforts. This is because the production of certificates is outsourced to a graphic designer & not created in-house.

However, some delegates require a Certificate of Attendance (Eg evidence submission for ARCP, application of in lieu study leave etc), especially after having attended the full day teaching session. In view of this, Certificate can be issued to those who require it for a fee of £20. This service is optional.

If you chose to receive a certificate, please complete payment using the link which will come up once the registration form is submitted. Alternatively, you can make the payment here if your registration has been confirmed.

For the minority of delegates attending the session by paying a registration fee, certificates will be issued without any additional charge.

Refunds for Certificates

For delegates who pay the £20, cancellations before 5pm (UK) on May 10th will incur an admin charge of £5 & the rest will be refunded. Cancellelations after 5pm on May 10th will not be refunded.
