FAQs

Practical ECG Series is a unique format of ECG teaching for busy senior clinicians who wish to upgrade their ECG interpretation skills beyond the basic ECG interpretation commonly taught in Emergency Medicine.

It is a series of half day online ECG teaching sessions, usually 5 hours long and conducted roughly every 2-3 months. During each session, 15 random ECGs from all major ECG topics will be covered. The focus of the session will be on sharing practice changing insights which are not commonly taught in routine ECG teaching. During each session, different ECGs will be discussed with a variety of learning points.

In keeping with the stated goals of this ECG teaching platform (Practical ECG Courses), the teaching will be designed keeping in mind that it is a resource primarily aimed at senior clinicians who are familiar with basic ECG interpretation and wishing to upgrade their skills beyond basic ECG interpretation. The teaching will involve practical knowledge relevant to clinical practice in A&E.

This is aimed at clinicians working in acute specialities like Emergency Medicine or Acute Medicine who have been regularly interpreting ECGs for atleast 2-3 years & is familiar with the common ECG patterns seen in ED.

Knowledge of basic ECG interpretation will be assumed

Please note that this requirement of 2-3 years of regular ECG interpretation is being used as a rough guide as I believe that it takes atleast a couple of years of regular ECG interpretation to be reasonably familiar with common ECG patterns. This may not be applicable for all though - there may be exceptions to this. If you are not sure if this course would be appropriate for you or not, please do not hesitate to email me.

The level of discussion will be such that ECG interpreters across all grades from ST3 to Consultants will benefit from the session.

While this workshop is primarily aimed at clinicians based in Emergency Medicine & Acute Medicine, any clinician who has been regularly interpreting ECGs for atleast 2-3 years & is familiar with common ECG patterns of ischaemia is welcome.

As far as I am concerned, there are only 2 levels of ECG interpretation - that expected from Cardiologists & Non-Cardiologists. All my teaching is focussed on helping non-Cardiology clinicians develop a level of ECG interpretation appropriate for their clinical practice. And that includes specialties like General Medicine, Critical care, Anaesthesia, Respiratory Medicine, Family Medicine & General Practitioners.

This is because the registration for the Practical ECG Series employs a tiered pricing system wherein the registration fee will depend on how early you register after the registrations open on September 28th at 9am.

A first come, first served principle will be followed with regards to discounted registration.

The registration fee starts at £20, which represents a 50% discount on the full charge of £40. There are a few tickets at this rate of £20, after which the next few tickets will be available at £25 and so on in £5 increments until £40.

So if you are someone who is interested in attending the session, I would strongly recommend registering as early as possible once the registrations open to avail of the maximum discount.

If you are someone who can afford the full charge of £40, you can opt to pay the full charge & leave the discounted rates for those may benefit from it.

Unfortunately the live teaching session will not be recorded as recording a session inevitably brings down the interactiveness of the delegates. As I base my discussions almost entirely around the interpretation of the delegates, recording the session is something that directly impacts the quality of the session.

In addition, the workshop is meant to serve as a safe space for physicians in senior roles to practice ECG interpretation. In order to provide an ambience of psychological safety to all delegates, it is vital that the delegates have the freedom to express their interpretation without the fear of being recorded.

This will be informed in due course.

Certificates of attendance (equivalent to 4 CPD points) will be sent to all delegates within 7 working days of the session.

My name is Obaid. I have been an Emergency Physician for over 11 years - initially as a Specialist Emergency Physician in India, then as a EM Registrar in London & now currently in EM training in Leeds.

During my early years in EM, I had a mentor in a Cardiologist who taught me the basic concepts of ECGs. Every week we used to have a dedicated 2 hour ECG teaching moderated by the Cardiology team during which we covered one chapter from Leo Schamroth's 'An Introduction to Electrocardiography' - over a period of 6-7 months we covered the entire book. This was repeated multiple times over the next few years. This rigorous training completely changed the way I interpreted ECGs. It also sparked  in me a lifelong passion to learn more about ECGs. As a result, I have spent a significant part of the last decade learning as well as teaching ECG interpretation.

Most ECG teaching resources are focussed on MBBS doctors who wish to learn basic ECG interpretation. However, there are very limited resources aimed at experienced clinicians who are already familiar with basic ECG interpretation, and wish to learn advanced ECG interpretation that is appropriate for their specialty. So my aim is to help develop resources for non-Cardiologists (especially EM & AM physicians), which will help them develop expert level ECG interpretation skills in their relevant specialty.

I believe that advanced ECG interpretation is a mandatory skill for all Emergency Physicians. And that this skillset can only be attained by regular active efforts being made to improve the skillset - what I mean to say is that, advanced ECG interpretation is not something learnt on the job.

I get regularly invited to do ECG teaching at both at different trusts within the NHS as well as for A&E trainees outside of the UK. In 2024, I have also been invited to conduct ECG Workshops on Subtle ACS at RCEM's EMTA Conference (2024) & Oxford's OSEM Conference (2024).
